In 2003 Saudi Arabia outlawed the sale of Barbies, as she did not conform with the ideals of Islam due to the nature of her clothes. Stating "Jewish Barbie dolls, with their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West."
In 2005 research was published suggesting girls often go through a stage where they hate their Barbies and subject then to different punishments, such as decapitation and placing the doll in the microwave.
Totally Tattoos Barbie was released in 2009, a range of tattoos which could be applied to the doll, one of which included a lower back tattoo which led to controversy as many felt this could lead to children wanting to get tattoos.
