Getting "Barbie-fied"

Today I got my friend, Steph, who is going to play the real life Barbie in my film to get "Barbie-fied"

We started off by taking photos of her "naturally" (she didn't want photos of her without any make-up at all so we went with natural make-up instead).

We then started on the make-up, first the heavy foundation

Then the eye shadow

As these photos are only a test run to see how close she'd look like to Barbie and to get a rough idea of photos I could use for my poster we don't have a proper Barbie outfit. For the final film she will be wearing the classic Barbie pink outfit.

Choosing My Barbie

With the help of my friends I have received many different Barbie dolls to make my film, they are all different so I had to decide which one to use, one ever came pregnant.

Other's had rather crazy hair

Technical Terms in Film

In class we learnt about different technical terms used in the media industry.

Camera Angles
The positioning of the camera in relation to what is being shot. The camera might be at eye level or a high or low angle to what is being filmed.

High Camera Angle - the camera is high up then pointed down, an example of this is pictured on the right of Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Low Camera Angle - the camera is low down then pointed up higher.
Editing
The stage in the film-making process in which sound and images are organised into narrative (order)

Continuity Editing - this is the most common type of editing, it creates a sense of reality and time moving forward. This technique is often referred to as invisible editing as it does not draw attention to the process. This process is often Linear Narrative - where events happen chronologically.
Credits - The text at the beginning and ending of a film giving details of the cast, crew etc,

Cross Cutting - The editing technique, interweaving or interspersing one narrative action (scene, sequence or event) with another - usually in different locations. By combining the 2 it suggests to the audience that the events are happening simulataneously (parallel action).
This happens in "The Hangover" when Phil is on the phone to Tracey and they are speaking about Doug.

Eye line match - Cutting from a character to what that character has been looking at. This is used when someone is looking a photograph of someone.

Flashback - A scene or moment in a film which the audience is shown an event that happened earlier. Likewise a Flash-forward offers the audience something that will happen in the future. An example of a flashback is in "LOST" this is a TV show where there are flashbacks to before the characters crashed on the island. An example of the flash-forward is again in the opening of "The Hangover" when you see people getting ready for the wedding, this is a flash-forward as the rest of the film is before this happened.

Montage editing - Different shots, sometimes unconnected edited together to create meaning. A classic example of this is the "Rocky" training montage as seen below. There is a quick sucession of shots instead of showing all of the training which would take hours to watch they have been cut down to short shots which come to 2 minutes.

Fast Paced Editing - Rapid succession of many shots, often less than 2 seconds each. An example of this is the opening of "Jurassic Park". In the opening there are 46 different shots. This shows how quickly the shots change. The rapid succession of shots builds tension and puts you right amoung the action.

Slow Paced Editing - Long shots often of dialogue, up to 10-15 seconds each. "Jurassic Park" is again an example of this type of editing. This shows expression of the actors and emotion. Long shots are there so you can take it all in.

Camera Shots

Extreme Wide Shot - This view is so far out from the subject that they aren't even visible, this is oftern used as an establishing shot.

Very Wide Shot - The subject is barely visable, but the emphasis is still on placing them in the environment.

Wide Shot - The subject takes up the full frame, or at least as much as possible, this is same a the Long Shot

Mid Shot - Shows some part of the subject in more detail whilst still giving an impression of the whole subject

Medium Close Up - Half way between a Medium Shot and Close Up

Close Up - A certain feature or part of the subject takes up the whole frame.

Extreme Close Up - The Extreme Close Up gets right in and shows extreme detail.

Cutaway - A shot of something other than the current action

Cut-in - Shows some part of the subject in detail

Two-shot - A comfortable shot of two people, framed similarly to mid shot

Over-the-shoulder Shot - Looking from behind a person at the subject this is used for conversation or interviews

Noddy Shot - Usually refers to a shot of the interviewer listening and reacting to the subject, although noddies can be used in drama and other situations.

Point of View Shot - Shows a view from the subjects perspective, the camera is replacing the eyes.

Weather Shot - The subject is the weather, usually the sky. Can be used for other purposes.

Sound

Diegetic Sound - Sound that can be heard by the characters within the scene, music playing out of speakers or phone ringing or someone speaking. An example of this that we watched in class was a clip from "The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse" where there is diegetic sound and non diegetic sound.
Non-diegetic Sound - Sound only heard by the audience, narration, soundtrack, score. In "Peep Show" it has non-diegetic sound when you hear the character's thoughts.
Score - The musical component of the soundtrack, usually composed specifically for the scene. A famous composer of scores is Hans Zimmer, who composed the scores of many Hollywood blockbusters ranging from the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy to "The Ring" and "Pearl Harbor"
Narration - A voice telling the narrative as it goes. This can be used both alongside and instead of dialogue with the scene. Sometimes you can hear characters thoughts. Narration takes different forms for example in "The Wonder Years" the main character is narrating as an adult over his as a child.
Another more recent example of this is the tv show "How I Met Your Mother" in this show the narrator is the central character, Ted, in the year 2030 talking to his children about, as the title suggests, how he met their mother. Future Ted narrates the present as when you see the children it is a flashforward.

Naming my film

I've been debating what to call my film, I was originally going to call it Barbie: The Real Story. I also wanted the Barbie style of font, so I Googled to see if I could find a font generator to create it. I found this website, picture below, and entered my film title to see what it would look like.

This is what my original title would look like

However, I was thinking of different ideas as well. I then decided upon naming it Barbie: The Story They Didn't Want You To Know, as seen below

Although this title is longer I think it is better than my original idea and this is now the working title of my film

Plot Responses

Here are the plot responses from the people in my media class;

Aimee - really like the idea, especially how you then zoom out and see the real life story behind. Do you mind that the stop motion would be a bit unclear? and do you think you have enough time as it's a lengthy process? Also, how do you plan to get the barbie and ken dolls to stand up on their own as they can't? Have a look at Katy Perry's 'your so gay' music video, she did this with barbie and ken and it really worked!

Martha - I really like your idea! Its very simple, but that's what makes it so nice. Its very creative and I think a lot of people would be very interested in watching it. Have you thought about how long it may take? Its so brave of you taking this on. Also, have you thought of the character that's going to play the real like barbie lookalike, do you have a suitable actor?

Farah - I think that this is a very good idea! It is original and creative - The use of dolls is humorous and stop motion is really effective. The irony of it being someone playing with the dolls is an effective ending to the plot and will engage the audience. I know that this is just a trial - but it's slightly shaky, so planning and using a tripod will be really good! :D

Nicole - Initial idea is very good, particularly the zooming out onto a real life person/character who resembles Barbie. Have you thought about whether you want to include dialogue, narration, or simply just music? And are you going to use the same Barbie and Ken dolls, or ones from different ranges? (Because obviously the regular Barbie doll doesn't have a baby!)

Ben - The idea is great as it is something that most people can relate to, at some level, and with the qwerky twist of being with Barbie dolls makes it slightly comedic along with the final event, the audience will have a greater emotional connection to the piece. The stop-motion is a good idea that can either make or break a piece, do you plan to work on the technique of stop-motion production to make it the best it can be?

Alice - Love your idea, I think its fab how you go from stop motion to real life. I think the use of barbies then using a "real life" barbie is really cleaver, and will make it flow between the stop motion and real action good. Have you thought about what setting you are going to use for the stop motion? are you going to build the set yourself etc? x

Lily - A very interesting concept, stop motion can be very effective and the ideas of a kind of grim life for Barbie is very original. However, try keeping the camera still and in focus when filming. A tripod perhaps?
Beatrice - I think you have a really good idea and it would be fun to do and I like the twist at the end, but it could take a long time, but would be definitely worth it. Next time really work on getting the camera in exactly the same place as you left it as it tended to jiggle around a lot which made it look less fluent.

Lizzie - Your idea is very unique, the idea works really well with the combination of film and stop-motion. It's great that you have already tried out some animation and clearly have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Will you be able to find an actor that looks like the doll?

Evie - Heard your idea and it sounds like a really original and creative concept. Sounds great and I'd love to watch something like that which totally goes against the stereotypical story of a character like Barbie. I hope the stop motion goes well because it's quite difficult but done well it can be really effective. Have you given some thought to the kind of music you might use to emphasise the emotions of the doll more, as obviously you won't be getting much variety in the way of facial expressions.

I also interviewed a couple who weren't in my class, to see their responses to my idea.

Barbie's Careers

The premise of my film is that the Real life Barbie just wants to be Barbie and doesn't think she needs an education as she just has her looks and feels she can rely upon those for the rest of her life. However, upon further research the Barbie doll has had numerous careers.
Such as;
Spanish teacher,
Special Education teacher,
Doctor, Dentist,
Plastic Surgeon,
Vet,
Army Officer,
President of United States of America,
Firefighter,
Life guard (Baywatch),
Astronaut,
Paleontologist,
Pilot,
Tour guide (Toy Story 2 Special Edition),
Babysitter,
Cat Burglar (Christian Louboutin edition),
Cowgirl,
Superhero edition,
McDonald's cashier,
Bus driver,
Waitress and many more.

Rough Draft of Script

This is a rough outline of the script, I still need to add speech between the Real Life Barbie and the girl trying to talk to her. I also need to add some narration as well.

INT SCHOOL - DAY

BARBIE is at school, sitting doing her nails, not paying attention to what's going on. She doesn't pay attention to what the teacher is saying.

Narrator - This is a story of a young girl, Barbie. As you can see, she doesn't really pay attention at school. Barbie believes that she doesn't need to get an education, she's a pretty young girl and she can just rely on her looks.

INT BAR2.0 - NIGHT

Narrator - This was the night everything changed for Barbie, the night she met Ken.

BARBIE is at the bar getting a drink with friends, she is being approached by a man, KEN.

BARBIE AND KEN HAVE A CONVERSATION HE BUYS HER A DRINK, THEY FLIRT, SHE GIVES HIM HER NUMBER.

FLASHFORWARD TO A FEW DAYS LATER THEY ARE TOGETHER AND IN LOVE

EXT. FIELD - DAY

BARBIE and KEN run towards each other in a field,

INT. BATHROOM - DAY

BARBIE sitting on the floor, crying, next to her is a pregnancy test, it's positive

INT. WEDDING - DAY

BARBIE and KEN'S wedding, she is heavily pregnant. She is really happy, KEN not so much

INT. HOUSE - DAY

BARBIE and KEN are standing over a crib, with their newborn baby

INT. BARBIE AND KEN'S ROOM - NIGHT

BARBIE walks in on KEN with another woman (this would either be an updated version of Barbie such as Malibu Barbie or it could be another man such as G.I. Joe or Action Man.)

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

BARBIE is passed out on the sofa holding a Jack Daniels bottle, there are lots of cigarettes surrounding her and a line of cocaine on the table.

INT. REAL LIFE LIVING ROOM - DAY

Zoom out to see someone holding the BARBIE doll and is playing with them, another girl is there also, she looks exactly like a REAL LIFE BARBIE.

GIRL PLAYING WITH BARBIE TRIES TO TALK TO THE GIRL CONVINCING HER TO GET AN EDUCATION AND NOT JUST RELY UPON HER LOOKS BECAUSE THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE PRETTIER OUT THERE.
REAL LIFE BARBIE DOESN'T REALLY LISTEN AND IS JUST PLAYING WITH HER HAIR NOT REALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO HER

Narration

I intend to use narration in my short film so I did some research into it, I wanted to see different examples of narration in feature films.

A Narrator is, within any story, the non-fictional or fictional, personal or impersonal entity who tells the story to the audience. When the narrator is also a character within the story, he or she is sometimes known as the viewpoint character.

"American Beauty" this film is narrated by the main character Lester Burnham, although he looks back over his life because as he reveals in the opening scene (seen below) he is in fact dead whilst narrating this.

"Kick-Ass" This film is narrated by the main character, there is a scene within this film where he is being beaten up and he is narrating it. Speaking directly to the audience acknowledging that as he is speaking over the action now he must survive it.

"Perks of Being a Wallflower" based on a book, the film follows Charlie who narrates the film through letters to a friend.

Characters - Short Film

In my film I want several characters: the Barbie doll, Ken doll, the real life Barbie and the person who is trying to convince the real life Barbie to get an education.

When developing my idea for the film, I have done a lot of research into Barbie. But when thinking about the real life Barbie and the other character trying to convince her to become her own person and not just become a real life Barbie who doesn't think for herself and just wants a man to provide for her. When I thought of who the other character is, trying to get through to the real life Barbie, I imagine an older sister or someone who has an education and tries to convince "Barbie" to do the same and not just rely on her looks as they will fade.

Below are the character profiles for my characters

Barbie Doll - This character is the typical Barbie doll, falls for Ken and doesn't bother getting a job or anything just becomes a housewife for Ken and raises their child. This pregnancy was unplanned therefore neither of them are ready in their relationship to raise a child together and are forced into a marriage of convenience due to the impending baby. When Barbie finds out that Ken has been cheating on her something breaks inside her and she goes down a dark path of drink and drugs. She becomes really strung out and begins to look nothing like she did and what the stereotypical Barbie is supposed to look like.

Ken Doll - This character is again the typical doll, he represents the stereotypical male going to provide for his family. He is shocked by the unplanned pregnancy so then feels he has to marry Barbie although they may not love each other and aren't ready to be married. He feels as though their relationship has moved too quickly and wasn't ready for such a serious relationship. He then rebels against this marriage and cheats on Barbie. (In my original idea he cheats on Barbie with Cindy, although when doing some audience research it was suggested that he in fact cheats on Barbie with another Ken doll or an Action Man, or a G.I. Joe, this would indeed shock Barbie so much she turns to drink and drugs. So I may use this idea instead although it still is in the planning stages. There was also the idea that it could be a "Malibu Barbie" a younger model of the classic Barbie.)

Real Life Barbie - This girl isn't actually Barbie but she acts like her; she is all plastic and is obsessed with Barbie. She doesn't care about her education and is obsessed with her looks and doesn't feel she needs to get a job or anything like that as she just wants to get married and be provided for by her husband. I have an actress to portray this Barbie, she would be really good to play her as she looks like Barbie and I feel she can come across as a Barbie look-a-like and act like someone who doesn't care about school.

Real Life Barbie's friend - I don't really know much about this character yet, but she is an educated female who is trying to get through to Barbie that she needs to get an education so she can provide for herself and get a job instead of letting "Ken" provide for her. This character tries to get through to Real Life Barbie by trying to impart her wisdom through the only medium Real Life Barbie can understand - through Barbie dolls. Although she doesn't care about her looks as much as Real Life Barbie she doesn't give up on them completely, she looks slightly bookish and she wears clothes to make her look educated and not clothes that a "Barbie Girl" would wear.

Narrator - I'd like a narrator over the top of the film, this would be a man with a deep voice something like that of Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones. Or I was also thinking that it could be the voice of Real Life Barbie's friend, I want the Narrator to give a sort of fairytale feel to it.

Final Plot Idea

The main plot line for my short film is how Barbie and Ken meet, fall in love, have a baby, get married and are supposed to live happily ever after. But Barbie finds out Ken cheated on her with Cindy, so she turns to drink and smoking and her life goes downhill. She becomes really strung out and tired and goes down a downward spiral. You then zoom out to see that it is actually people playing with Barbie and Ken dolls, with a real life person who looks exactly like the real life Barbie. They are trying to explain to her what her life may end up like if she doesn't get a proper education and find a good career, skating through life on her looks.

Real Life Barbie

There have been lots of new articles about the "Real Life Barbie", many women have tried to emulate the doll by getting different plastic surgery procedures to try and look like her more and more. Here is an article about one of these women Valeria Lukyanova, who has made it her life aim to look exactly like the doll. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/wanderlust/barbie-ukrainian-woman-mattel

There have also been lots of different studies into whether it would actually be possible to be the real life Barbie, taking Barbie's measurements and applying them to a real live woman. The picture below illustrates the effects. Many women want to look exactly like Barbie even paying up £500,000 for plastic surgery like self proclaimed real life Barbie Sarah Burge.

This is a picture of Steph the actress that I am going to use for my real life Barbie. As you can see she has long blonde hair although when I film her it will be straightened and she will be wearing a lot of makeup like Barbie. She'll not play a major part in the film as it will predominately be stop-motion. She would feature in the final moments of the film where it is revealed it is just someone acting out the dolls lives.
Steph will also feature in the both of the posters. I will either use the poster of her all "Barbied up" or the poster where she is strung out on alcohol and drugs.

Breaking the Fourth Wall

The fourth was is the screen in front of you in film, television and theatre, when you break the fourth wall the person speaking speaks directly to the audience.

An example of breaking the fourth wall in TV is the TV show, "Miranda" , also in the TV show "Modern Family"

There are many other examples of films in which the characters break the fourth wall and either talk or gesture directly to the audience; "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang", "Fight Club", "The Rocky Horror Show", "Annie Hall", "Rubber", "Amelie", "Austin Powers 2", "High Fidelity", "Spaceballs", "Wayne's World".

I don't think I will be using this method in my short film as I plan to be using dolls. However, to a certain extent Real Life Barbie would be breaking the fourth wall in talking to the Narrator.

Character Profiles

In today's lesson we made different character profiles of either someone you'd like to be stuck in a lift with and someone who you'd HATE to share a lift with.
I did a character profile of someone I wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with. A really creepy man with no sense of personal space.
Below is the character outline that I gave the actor playing this character so he would know how to act and what to say.

"Hi Big Brother! I'm ...... I live at home with my mum but I live in the basement so it's my own space! I have lots of friends although I've never actually met any of them they're all on World of Warcraft, I love playing role play games online it's sooo fun! It's where I met my future wife, Dragonbreather82 they're the love of my life although we've never met. I don't believe in personal space it's overrated! I also don't like being quiet so when I'm not talking I like breathing really loud so people know I'm there!"

Below is the video of Adam doing the character.

We also did another character who is seen below, played by Lizzie, she is very... enthusiastic

Barbie and Ken research

Barbie is one of the most iconic childhood toys for little girls. It was originally launched in 1959 by Mattel Inc.
The Barbie doll has become so iconic that she even has her own fictional background story. There were numerous books written about her in the 1960's giving her an in depth life. Her real name is Barbara Roberts from Wisconsin. She had an on/off relationship with Ken Carson since 1961, however, they broke up in 2004 and during this time Barbie became very close with an Australian surfer called Blaine. In 2006 there were reports that Barbie and Ken were hoping to rekindle their relationship after Ken had a makeover.
Barbie has had many different careers; she has a pilots license and has also been a flight attendant, astronaut, doctor and a Nascar driver.

The original Barbie Doll in 1959
Original Barbie and Ken

There have been many controversies when it comes to Barbie; many activist groups have been against giving their children Barbie dolls as they believe she gives off the wrong body image for young girls. If you use Barbies proportions for a real person then it would not be physically possible. Her hips would not be able to support her body.
Many feel that Barbie dolls should be held to a higher standard than other dolls as children may view her as a role model and try to emulate her.
Another is that in 1963 a Barbie Babysits was released which featured a book called "How to Lose Weight" where the only tip was "Don't Eat", this caused outrage among parents as they saw this as promoting anorexia among young girls.
In 2003 Saudi Arabia outlawed the sale of Barbies, as she did not conform with the ideals of Islam due to the nature of her clothes. Stating "Jewish Barbie dolls, with their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessories and tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West."
In 2005 research was published suggesting girls often go through a stage where they hate their Barbies and subject then to different punishments, such as decapitation and placing the doll in the microwave.

Totally Tattoos Barbie was released in 2009, a range of tattoos which could be applied to the doll, one of which included a lower back tattoo which led to controversy as many felt this could lead to children wanting to get tattoos.

In 2010 "Toy Story 3" came out and Barbie and Ken were reunited once again at Sunnyside Daycare Centre

Film Poster Ideas

My idea for my poster was of a girl who looks like Barbie reading the Barbie annual. I want it to look like a Romantic Comedy film poster when it won't actually be. Below is the poster for "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason". For my poster I want the girl to have a similar face to that of Bridget, although part of it would be obscured by the Barbie annual.

I want the poster to come across as a Romantic Comedy-esque film when in fact the plot line is that Barbie turns to alcohol and smoking.
There have been many Barbie films; however, none like the one I am planning on making. Below is one of the posters of Barbie, I want to have mine slightly like this with the classic Barbie pink writing with a pretty blonde girl; however, instead of it being a doll it would be a real person. She will look like Barbie with long blonde hair all made up with lots of make up.

Another poster idea I have also had is one of a strung out real life Barbie looking run down and tired with bags under her eyes maybe smoking a cigarette, hair all messed up with no make up whatsoever. As you can see below in the poster for the film "Young Adult" it shows Charlize Theron kind of messed up and not all prim and put together like most film posters. She looks slightly hungover and I'd like that sort of feel to be emulated in my film poster as well. I also have a screen shot of Lizzy Caplan from the film "Bachelorette" below, she is the sort of character who I want the post break up Barbie to look like, she does drugs, smokes and drinks too much, her life hasn't turned out how she thought it would and isn't going anywhere career wise. Just how Barbie will be when she finds out her husband is cheating on her.

Recreation of a short film - "My Beast Friend"

In groups we were given the task of recreating a short film, our group chose to do the short "My Beast Friend" as seen below. This short was part of a scheme for BBC Scotland for training purposes, the only criteria was that producers and directors had never working in those roles for the drama department before. Thus making it a new experience for those working and training them by making a short film before a TV show or feature length.

Characters

There are 3 characters in this film; Fluff the cat, Ed and Amelia.
Fluff - Fluff is a cat owned by Ed, in Ed's eyes he sees Fluff as a man in a cat suit whom he has conversations with.
Ed - Ed is Fluff's owner whom is trying to get rid of and tries to convince Fluff that he is going to a magical place called "Pleasureland"
Amelia - Amelia is Ed's girlfriend, when she meets Fluff she instantly falls in love, and she shes Fluff as an actual cat rather than a man in a cat's suit which Ed sees him as.

Plot

The plot of this short is that Ed is packing some things away to get rid of, there is a man in a man in a cat suit who is reading a label around his neck, reading free to a good home. When the cat asks what's going on he accusses Ed that he's doing this because of his new girlfriend Amelia, although he calls her Ameba. Ed then tells Fluff that he is going to a wonderful, magical place called Pleasureland. This impresses Fluff and he begins to like this idea. There is then a knock on the door and Amelia comes in and sees Fluff, reads the tag around his neck and picks Fluff up saying that she would be his "new mummy" and starts stroking him. Fluff then realises what was actually happening and calls Ed something but is cut off before he can finish.

Script for "My Beast Friend"

INT HOUSE - DAY
Man with box walks into the shot,

FLUFF - Pl-pleease - Ed, tell me what's going on right now or I'm going to sick up all of yesterday's Tuna (sick noise). Oh no it's that girl isn't it, Ameba. You're mad she's way out of your league!

ED - This has nothing to do with Amelia I just, I just wanted to sort my life out get rid of the dead wood, so I thought I'd take you to this great fun place just for cats, just until I finish tidying up. It's called Pleasureland.

FLUFF - Pleasureland. Sweet. Not before time.

DOORBELL

ED - No, it's only...

AMELIA - I'm so sorry Ed, I know I'm super early! Oh my God, who's this?

ED - That's er Fluff

AMELIA - "Free to good home", some monster actually abandoned this sweet little creature? Well Fluff I guess that makes me your new mummy now

FLUFF - You lying c.......

Location

For the locations for our recreation, we were first going to use a bungalow situated at our school however, this did not suit our film and we decided to film at one of our groups house instead.
